Current Responsibilities
Dr. Hamilton currently serves as the Chief Medical Information Officer and Product Strategy Practice Director for PointClear Solutions, Inc., an innovative healthcare-focused software development firm with particular expertise in goal directed and user centric design. His particular focus is on helping healthcare organizations achieve their business goals through the strategic use of information technology via the implementation or integration of existing technologies and/or the development of custom solutions. In this role, he also leads a distinguished physician advisory panel that assists PointClear with understanding and responding to current and emerging trends in healthcare delivery.
In addition, he continues to practice pediatrics on a limited basis at a private practice that he co-founded in 2006. He is an administrator and active user of an ambulatory EMR in that setting, and he remains an active member of the clinical staff at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.
Prior Experience
Prior to joining PointClear Solutions in 2011, Dr. Hamilton was the Corporate Director of Medical Informatics for Vanguard Health Systems, a 26 hospital investor-owned health system based in Nashville, TN. His responsibilities included the creation of the overall clinical information systems strategy for the inpatient and outpatient settings, the development of Vanguard’s health information exchange strategy, the creation of a business intelligence infrastructure for the clinical operations and quality departments, and the development of tools and process for developing and managing clinical content and clinical decision support. In addition to these responsibilities, he also actively participated in key quality and patient safety initiatives and corporate strategic planning activities. He was routinely engaged to suggest innovative informatics approaches for continuously improving performance throughout the health system.
Before joining Vanguard in 2007, Dr. Hamilton held a number of positions within McKesson’s information technology division. His work focused primarily on the product development, implementation, and product management activities related to McKesson’s CPOE solution called Horizon Expert Orders (HEO). HEO was purchased from Vanderbilt by McKesson in 2001. In 2005, he also began the implementation of an ambulatory EMR solution for a private 35 provider 7 location pediatric practice in Nashville, TN.
Education, Awards, and Professional Affiliations
Dr. Hamilton received his Doctorate in Medicine degree from the University of Tennessee – Memphis College of Medicine and completed his residency in Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. During his residency program, he also worked extensively with Vanderbilt’s Department of Biomedical Informatics on a number of clinical systems projects. He has been a member of the American Medical Informatics Association since 2001. Additionally, he has been a member of the Health Informatics Taskforce of the Federation of American Hospitals and the National Quality Forum’s Clinical Decision Support Technical Expert Panel.
